What: Tik Tok Tik Tok: Time for Climate Action

When: December 12, 2009

Where: Marikina Riverbanks Amphiteathre, Barangka Marikina, Metro Manila

Climate change is real. The events we have witnessed this past month with the damage brought about by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng have proven that climate change is a serious matter which ultimately affects us all.. Even as we are now in the process of rebuilding the country in the aftermath of the typhoons, climate change is still very apparent with erratic weather changes and disturbances we are still experiencing such as unusually hot days in what should have been otherwise cold and rainy months and vice-versa.

In December this year, world leaders will attend a climate conference in Copenhagen with the goal of having a global resolution to the climate change issue and help countries that are most affected by this phenomenon. Globally, an alliance of different organizations have launched the tck tck tck: Climate Action Now campaign to pressure world leaders to reach a resolution to address the climate change issue. In the Philippines, international humanitarian–development NGO Oxfam, together with artist organization Dakila: Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism have partnered together to help raise awareness for the issue of climate change and what can be done about it.

A few days before Ondoy hit Manila, Oxfam and Dakila launched the local tik tok tik tok: Time for Climate Action campaign and the artist advocates who are supporting the cause. International advocates for Oxfam include Scarlett Johansson, Monica Bellucci, U2, Gael Garcia Bernal, Coldplay and Annie Lennox. Locally, celebrity endorsers for Oxfam?s climate change campaign are beauty-queen Miriam Quiambao and surfer Paolo Soler. An Artist Gathering was held last September 22 at the PETA Theater in Quezon City where artists from different fields came together to learn more about climate change and what they as artist advocates can do to contribute.

Artist advocates who have committed their involvement to the cause include: actors Diether Ocampo, Alessandra de Rossi, Ronnie Lazaro and Ping Medina; hosts and sports-enthusiasts Marc Nelson, Rovilson Fernandez and Reema Chanco; directors Dante Nico Garcia, Jim Libiran and RA Rivera; walking-tour guide Carlos Celdran; photojournalist Raffy Lerma and Veejay Villafranca; celebrities like Bianca Gonzales;, Rafael Rosell and Toni Gonzaga; comedian Tuesday Vargas, designer Kate Torralba, comic artist Manix Abrera, and comedy dance group Cardio Boys. Several of today’s top musicians are also artist advocates for the tik tok tik tok campaign which include: Rico Blanco, Noel Cabangon, Bayang Barrios, Cookie Chua, Buhawi Meneses of Parokya ni Edgar, Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree, Aia de Leon of Imago, Yan Yuzon of Sponge Cola, Gloc 9, Vin Dancel of Peryodiko, Marc Abaya of Kjwan, Kat Agarrado of SinoSikat, Pochoy Labog and Lourd De Veyra, Francis De Veyra, Arwin Nava and Junji Lerma of Radioactive Sago Project. Activities for the campaign include school tours around different universities and colleges to educate the youth about the climate change issue. A major concert is also going to be held in different locations all over the world on December 12 to coincide with the Copenhagen conference.
